Romania today is a country of contrasts and conflicts springing from its unresolved communist past and from its extreme social inequalities. For her “Becheresque” series of photographs, Larisa Sitar has chosen a large group of houses being built in northern Romania by people who spend most of the year working abroad (for the most part in linguistically related France). A whole village, filled with these empty houses, documents both the ostentation with which these emigrants want to confirm their social status as well as their wandering between their native country and the more affluent West.
