Alexandra Ivanciu’s work is focused on a critique of social structures and stereotypes from a feminist perspective. Her piece "Embodying herstories" presents a specific personal interpretation of the history of art, referencing the work of women artists from Eastern Europe, which may generally be regarded as marginal. In a video installation, the viewer is exposed to monitors, from which they are also watched by the confident gaze of women artists via their own self-portraits, thus reversing the roles of observer and observed. We are watching a gaze which is aware of being watched, but refuses to be merely the object of a gaze. In this project, Ivanciu does not try to establish new norms, but rather to show the process of self-awareness and identification in an infinite number of possible histories and their interpretations.
