We are watching the television news in 1843. In Wales, peasant riots are raging against economic measures that are forcing farmers into bankruptcy. Thanks to the Old Testament reference, the riots resemble a carnival - men are disguised as Rebecca. Shifra Whewell transformed the historical event into a combination of objectifying TV reportage and musical, which is a combination of documentary shots and feature scenes. The resulting mix is purely fresh and fun. Even an uprising can be a pleasure if we dress well for it. The energy of the performers and the tempo of the music, everything comes together into a féerie that is firmly rooted in our present. -rv-
