START POINT PRIZE – Prize for emerging artists

Using animals for scientific experiments is one of the dark chapters of human kind and still represents a serious ethical problem. Michalina Mistrzak deals with this issue in her work Dog Museum. The hero of the documentary Journey to the Stars is an elderly woman originally from Russia who used to work in the Institute of Aviation Medicine as a nurse for dogs. They were used as test animals in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the Russian space programme. Some of them came back from space, some of them were even sent out repeatedly, the others, however, died in accidents or during the preparatory experiments. The protagonist of the film took care of the famous Laika, who was the first living creature to fly in outer space on a one-way mission with no planned return to Earth, as well the case with the other well-known dogs – Bělka, Strelka, Věterka and Ugolka. When she could not take the constant pressure anymore from working with test animals, with whom she had developed emotional relationships, she left the institute and fate brought her to Poland. The video has the character of a documentary and her memories are supplemented with shots from films of the period, and display cases with photographs and small artefacts which she brought with her as keepsakes of her time with the dogs. (mf) Používání zvířat při vědeckých experimentech je jednou z černých kapitol lidstva a zároveň dodnes živým etickým problémem. Ve své práci Muzeum psů se jím zabývá i Michalina Mistrzak. Hrdinkou dokumentu Cesta ke hvězdám je starší paní původem z Ruska, která kdysi pracovala v Institutu letecké medicíny jako ošetřovatelka psů. Ti zde v padesátých a šedesátých letech sloužili jako pokusná zvířata v rámci ruského kosmického programu. Část z nich se z kosmu vrátila, někteří byli dokonce vysíláni opakovaně, jiní však zahynuli při haváriích nebo v průběhu přípravných experimentů. Protagonistka filmu se starala jak o známou Lajku, která letěla jako první tvor do vesmíru a jejíž mise byla už předem naplánována bez návratu na Zem, tak i o další známé psy – Bělku, Střelku, Věterka či Ugolka. Když pak nevydržela trvalý stres spojený s prací s pokusnými zvířaty, k nimž si vytvořila citový vztah, z ústavu odešla a osud ji nakonec zavál do Polska. V dokumentárně pojatém videu jsou její vzpomínky doplněny ukázkami z dobových filmů, ve vitrínách jsou pak prezentovány fotografie a drobné artefakty, které si odnesla jako upomínku na své psy.
