Igor Ruf

Light in an enclosed object, shining out through holes in the surface, is a common motif in the works of Igor Ruf. The object in a dark space gains a secret, almost mystical dimension. In a way, he maintains this principal in the installation One of a Kind and Five Others: several identical objects are found in a dark room – some sort of boxes on metal supports, one of which replaces the head of a male figure. Their front sides resemble TV screens displaying constantly repeated abstract shots of a flickering motion reminiscent of a flapping bird wing. In reality, it is a purely mechanical matter and the impression is created with light, a roller blind and the motion of an unseen element. (mf)
