START POINT PRIZE – Prize for emerging artists

The project by Armin Gerold, a graduate from the studio of photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna is an attempt to depict an atmosphere which cannot be described in either images or text. His older work acts as a reference point and a counterpoint in this case, Continental Baths from 2008, a small jet of steam illuminated with colored light recalling the “gay topography of homosexual subculture of the 1970s”. The rest of the installation only consists of the artist’s own musical composition in which he sings one phrase over and over, about hiding, searching and desire. (pv)
