START POINT PRIZE – Prize for emerging artists

Marta Antoniak decided to show and examine the absurdity and bitterness of human existence through the portrayal of a fictional characted called Celine – a corpulent middle-aged lady dressed in oversized underwear. Whereas in a previous cycle Wonderland we met Celine in isolated grotesque situations where she is confronted with a lively world of children’s toys, in the monstrous multipart House Celine is plunged into a labyrinthine bizarre building where she finds herself in absurd and sad situations in every room. The life of an aging woman as one long series of cruel misunderstandings is enhanced by masterful miniature painting and rendering which is more appropriate for children’s books. (pv)
