Carmen Catuti

The collection of photographs Marmarilo (the Georgian word for marble) derives from the artist’s journey to Georgia. In Tbilisi, she was struck by the numbers of young people who spontaneously visited the local Orthodox churches, particularly by comparison to secular Europe. At first she charted the phenomenon in the style of documentary photography, and later decided to find an original language to express this scene, its visual principles and peculiar aesthetic, without necessarily using the actual settings. This approach then enabled the artist to continue the cycle in her studio in Leipzig.
