In “Myths and Legends of Slovakia,” Juraj Jakubčiak sketches the parallels between today’s situation of the individual as a representative of his nation and the historical situation under Austria-Hungary. He looks at how membership in a small nation is reflected in its intellectual and social environment, and asks whether we are aware of this parallel today. In order to illustrate this issue, he uses techniques of reconstruction and a museum-like approach to presentation. Displayed in glass cases are everyday items used by the intellectual heroes of the Slovak national revival associated with Ľudovít Štúr – fictional items, of course. The Štúrovites are also invoked through Jakubčiak’s paintings, which recall period iconography (group hunting portraits, dance, interiors, mystery). The artist brings the issue into the present day by projecting it onto his own generation in the form of video and photographs showing loosely reconstructed scenes from the revivalists’ excursions and debates.
