Amelia Beavis - Harrison

The "Penitentiary of Fallen Women" performance is based on a specific affair called the "Magdalene Laundries", i.e. Irish institutions for "fallen women" who were imprisoned and employed as laundrywomen. This tradition, which was in practice from the 17th century to the 1990s, has only recently been uncovered with common cases of humiliation, abuse or even death. The performance by Amelia Beavis-Harrison translates this painful topic into an allegorical drama within the framework of set pieces. It is all supplemented by a never-ending projection of linguistic terms, which form a terrifying hierarchy of subordination and abuse and crown the whole topic with freezing conviction. (pv)
