Iulian Bisericaru
In his large-format compositions, Iulian Bisericaru depicts an industrial landscape devoid of human presence – factories, airports and harbours. These motifs, in their own right fascinating for their monumentality and complexity, are provided as the launch pad for a broad range of painting effects. Bisericaru simplifies and monumentalises the motif to flat planes painted with expressive brushwork, while graphic details such as iron structures or high-visibility paint guide the abstract composition. In some passages, loud, loose painting with expressive elements (such as dripping paint) even departs from the motif, becoming an autonomous, almost abstract painted structure – but one that also evokes the rusty, chipped and peeling surfaces of industrial architecture.
