START POINT PRIZE – Prize for emerging artists

Jorge MoneoQuintana

Jorge Moneo is an exceptional draughtsman with a broad scope, as he proved in this year’s two cycles which differ very much from one another. The first is composed of figurative drawings overflowing with original, visual imagination, reminiscent of a scientific chart showing the natural water cycle – but shifted ad absurdum, with the repeating motif of the cylindrical tube evocative of some sort of underground irrigation system. This also applies for his second large cycle, in which he moved on to creating entirely abstract pictures. In the seemingly exhausted subject of abstract monochrome pictures, he has been able to present an original arrangement – precisely because he has also used pencil drawing, even in this large format. The pictures are formed by fields of black with differing levels of intensity, pencil stroke structures and even foundation textures that emerge when drawn on with a hard pencil. (Marcel Fišer)
